Overview

Sibo the Civil Engineer is a children’s book centered around a young, curious girl inspired to learn about civil engineering. The character is based on Mitchelle Sibongile Maphosa, a civil engineer who created the story to encourage children — especially young girls — to explore STEM fields.

Kakic partnered on this project to translate the book into an animated format, making the content more engaging, accessible, and impactful for young audiences.

The Idea

The goal was to take the educational foundation of the book and enhance it through visual storytelling.

Animation provided the opportunity to:

Rather than simply retelling the book, the aim was to bring it to life in a way that felt dynamic, engaging, and age-appropriate.

Our Approach

Story Adaptation
We transformed each chapter of the book into a structured screenplay suitable for animation.

Visual Development
Characters and environments were designed to closely reflect the original illustrations while adapting them for motion and screen.

Full Production Pipeline
From voice recording to final animation, the entire production process was handled end-to-end

What We Created

We produced a 3-episode animated series, with each episode focusing on a core area of civil engineering:

Episode 1: Road Construction

An introduction to how roads are built, including foundational concepts and materials

Episode 2: Concrete Works

Exploring how concrete is used in construction and why it is such an important material.

Episode 3: Water Works

A deeper look into water systems, including infrastructure and real-world applications.

Production Highlights

The project involved several technical and creative challenges that added depth and realism to the final output.

These elements helped bridge the gap between education and visual storytelling.

Impact

The animated series has been well received and continues to be used as an educational tool across Africa.

The project demonstrates how animation can play a meaningful role in education by making learning both accessible and enjoyable.
